Because Craigslist Hunt was gone this week (holidays), I thought I'd start a new game which I've been putting off for a while. I know you guys will love it. So if you have a bit of free time, let's get started.

Kinja'd!!!

(photo: turbomagazine)

What buildsheet is about is choosing a car and finding parts to create a car meeting the requirements and budget. (e.g. lemons car, $500) You are free to "buy" any cars and parts however I might add in little touches such as "The car must have less than 120hp stock. Or parts must be 50 US state legal." But because this is the first Buildsheet, I'll leave it open to just a topic and budget. I encourage you to modify the car to your personality and what you like. Make the car your own. Here's the criteria:

Topic: Best Autocross Car

Budget: $8,000

For now this is all the criteria but later on it will get more strict.

Happy Building!

Aight.

Here's a $3,000 '84 Corvette with a rebuilt/salvage title . With $5,000 left I'd strip & sell the interior for $500 gain. Spend $350 on a seat, $200 on a 4-point roll cage, $100 on a harness, $500 for GoPro goodies, and $2,000 on bolt-on suspension upgrades. The last $2,350 would go towards extra tires and some junkyard wheels.

Without a doubt one of the best 4-bangers I've ever driven. I've always thought they'd do damn well in autocross.

Give it a few suspension mods and weight reduction and you're all set.

Audi S4 - http://kansascity.craigslist.org/cto/4232714521…

Because it's "sophisticated fast" lol.

No mods needed for that.

Well, the chassis is easy for me (see my name) An Fc Rx7, set you back about $4000 for a good Turbo 2, leaving me $4000

Id spend $1000 on Bc coilovers

Racing beat sway set for $305 and the end links for $77

Poly Bushing set $150

A corksport power pulse exhaust is like $700, and its fine unless theres a sound restriction

The other $1700 would go to wheels and tires, without much research in autocross tires id probably go with 245 series R888s for $900 and then try to find some used 17" Rp-F1s for the last $800

Future upgrades would be a mazdatrix short throw shifter for $200, make a lexan hatch glass, and maybe bridgeporting for $800, which would probably come with the removal of the turbo untill i got the money for a turbo kit with a ball bearing batmowheel s372..

I wouldn't recommend the R888s. They used to be the spec tire for Spec944 but they didn't heat cycle well and took forever to warm up (not great for AX). We went back to RA-1s, but I believe those are becoming in short supply so another change may be coming this year.

People may give them crap all they want, but with this budget I don't know if you'll beat a C4 for autox. (Insert Miata screams here.) Strip it (including rear glass like the one I saw autox-ing a couple years ago), bushings, springs, shocks/struts, sway bars, take-off brakes from a newer Vette, R888s or RE-11s, and you're pretty much set.

I wonder how hard these would be with a MK3 Supra...

Kinja'd!!!

1987 Supra Non-Turbo ($2999)

I would talk the owner down to $2250, since it's A) a non-turbo and B) an automatic. Being the owner of a MK3, they would gladly take it. That would leave me with $5750.

I would then take out and sell: the front seats (+$150/pair), the back seats (+$80), the plastic panels all around the hatch (+$120 total) and the spare tire (+$20). I'd also sell the "sawblade" rims and tires (+$300)

I would then remove the 7M-GE long block and A340E transmission and sell those (+$250 and +$200, respectively). So that would leave me with $6870.

I would then buy this '97 2JZ-GTE with VVTI and A304E Transmission (-$1995) and then sell the A304E (+$200) and the A/T ECU (+$150). I'd just buy some off the shelf swap brackets (-$150), along with a Gasket Rebuild Set (-$439), differing VVTi gasket bits (-$50) and a new water pump (-$160) to rebuild the engine with. Obviously spark plugs, misc. bolts and hoses would be needed too (- about $300).

So $4,126 left. Need a transmission, so a used W58 5-speed out of a junk yard would be about $150. I would need a bell housing adapter (-$365), a new flywheel (-$315), a new clutch kit (-$465) and a aluminum driveshaft (-$439) that would work with the differential. I'd also need this manual transmission adaption kit that would work with a MK3 (-$527) to overcome the car's original lack of manual transmission bits.

So with $1865 left, I have everything but a seat, suspension and wheels taken care of. Actually, totally forgot about cooling. A MK3 intercooler kit (-$420), radiator (-$350), and hoses (-$99).

So $996 left. I'd pick up one of those generic race seats from AutoZone (-$120), these rip-off racing rims and tires (-$450) and have $306 left for some miscellaneous stuff that would come up during the build.

With the 2JZ's power, the slightly reduced weight (-500 lbs), and some okay tires, the MK3 would handle autocross just fine and be a blast.

Kinja'd!!!

1989 Saab 900 - $800

Sparco Race Pedals - $40

Andros N3 Anthracite Accent - $384

Bridgestone Potenza Pole Position - $348

StopTech Slotted Rotors - $386

Hawk DTC60 Pads - $135

Bilstein Touring Class Front Shocks - $104

Bilstein HD Rear Shocks - $170

Rally Armor Basic Mud Flaps - $16

Black Leather Corbeau TRS - $625

I don't know how much steel tubing I'd need, but let's say $50 worth for an exhaust system similar to Clarkson's XJS system. Straight outta the hood.

That brings my total to $3058. I don't know what sort of engine crap needs to be done to this, but I'd assume at least $4942 worth. So I'd turbocharge it, maybe a new tranny, but mostly I'd restore it, I think.
